Today our flight was supposed to leave at 3:00, so we pretty much had all day to relax. I also had more time to think about the facts that I did not write about before. So here are the facts about the Islands and wildlife that I forgot...
- The Galapagos Islands are about 600 miles off the Ecuadorian coast
- There are still multiple active volcanoes on the islands
- This is one of the most volcanic places on earth
- All of the islands are moving southeast on a belt
- The oldest islands are in the east
- The younest islands are in the west
- Isabela is the largest island
- Isabela Island looks like a giant seahorse
- Santa Cruz's volcanoes do not erupt
- Pirates used to eat the tortoises on the islands
- Espan Yola has traveled 800 years
- The Galapagos was named after the tortoises on one specific island. (the ones on the island that have a saddle shaped shell) Because Galapago in english means saddle.
- On the western side of the islands Fernan Dio has erupted at least 24 times
- There are 6 highly active volcanoes
- All of the islands will eventually go back into the sea
In the afternoon we went to the airport to take our flight but the flight was canceled. Mainly the flight was canceled because there were only six people on the flight. So instead, we took a long car ride to Cuenca from Guayaquil. The car ride turned out to be beautiful though. We went through a national park at the top of the andies.
